Burping: Babies swallow air when drinking, this traps air in their tummy, causing pain. To get rid of wind - Sit baby on your lap, one hand under baby’s chin.
GENTLY rub/pat back until you hear the wind come up or sit upright, baby on chest, head on your shoulder. Pat back. Rock slowly. OR, lie baby on tummy across your lap, holding its head in one hand. GENTLY rub back. Baby could vomit a bit.
Bathing: Bath time IS FUN bonding time. NEVER LEAVE YOUR BABY IN WATER ALONE! Get: warm water, clean cloth, baby soap/shampoo, towel, nappy, powder, cream/lotion, clean cloth. Bond with your baby when bathing them. Smile, laugh, talk, play together – but always be gentle and don’t excite them too much.
Test water temperature on inside of elbow/wrist. NOT TOO HOT/COLD. Room must be warm, undress baby on flat surface (table/floor). Wrap in towel. Wet clean cloth and WASH THIER FACE FIRST.
Unwrap baby. Soap hands. Rub on body – arms, around groin/genitalia, between fingers/toes. Lift baby. Support body one hand, hold baby’s feet. Rinse in bath. NEVER LET GO.
After rinsing, wrap in towel. Dry thoroughly. Put powder/cream/lotion on baby. Cream on bottom. Clean nappy. Clean clothes. GIVE BABY A HUG!
CLOTH WASHING YOUR BABY: Wipe eyes gently from inner corner outwards. NO SOAP ON FACE. Clean nose, ears. Pat dry. Use shampoo to gently wash head with cloth. Rinse with wet cloth. Now wash body – especially behind ears, under arms, around groin/genitalia. Dirty nappy? Wet cotton wool/toilet paper. Clean bum & genitals THOROUGHLY.
WASHING AFTER A DIRTY NAPPY: With Girls - Clean FRONT TO BACK away from vagina/labia. Plenty warm water. Clean thoroughly. With Boys - Clean penis/scrotum. Plenty warm water. DRY THOROUGHLY.
Once your baby is completely dry, put powder, cream/lotion on baby. Cream on bottom. Now put on clean nappy, clean clothes. GIVE BABY A HUG!
Washing nappies: ALWAYS soak, wash, rinse nappies. You can machine or hand wash - need bucket with child-proof tight lid FOR SOAKING. Every day: 1/2 bucket water with sterilising solution or bleach. READ INSTRUCTIONS.
Sleep: First few weeks, babies sleep up to 14 – 20 hours, waking 2 or 3 times at night for feeds. 3 months – better pattern, sleep longer at night. Sleeping same room as parents = safest
Sleep cues: Baby is tired when: yawns; jerky movements; quieter, don’t want to play; fussy; rubs eyes; sleepy sounds; crying; pulling faces; waving arms & legs; clenched fists.
Settling baby down: Put baby on back to sleep in a quiet, dark place. Some like being wrapped in cotton sheet. Try rocking baby in arms for short period, then settle in bed or pushing baby in a pram – back & forth. Softly humming, singing is very soothing/relaxing. Check baby not hot or cold. Give them dummy. Soothe & comfort them. Now you need to relax.
